Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano and it is found in Sicily an Italy. Etna is a compostivevolcano. It has been created by the Earth's active tectonicplate system – the African plate is moving below the Eurasian plate. As the Eurasian plate moves down into the Earth, it melts. Rising magma erupts at the surface lava and ash and builds Etna in the process Etna has erupted many times in the past. There are towns and villages surrounding the mountain, including Catania. In the past, the Italian authorities have used explosives, concrete dams, and ditches to divert lava flows away from these villages.
About 15,000 to 20,000 people were killed in the 1669 eruption, the worst known in history. houses were buried by the lava also, in this picture you can see what it had done. Mount Etna is in Sicily and Italy. It last erupted in 2013,2014 and is on going ever since. Mount Etna has the longest period of documented eruptions in the world. The first eruptions at Etna occurred 500,00 years go.

It is almost 11,000 feet high, making it the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Almost half of Etna’s major eruptions have happened during the last 100 years. The volcano covers a huge area, of over 460 square miles. About one quarter of the population of the island of Sicily lives on its slopes. Mount Etna has snow on it for most of the year. The sides of the volcano are also home to a large number of animal species, and there are vineyards and olive groves near the foot of the mountain. The most violent eruption was in March, 1669. The mountain erupted lava for several days, which destroyed several nearby villages and the city walls of Catania.
